For many patients, the hardest part of fertility care is simply getting started. In reality, the goal of fertility diagnostics is simple: to understand what’s going on in your body so your expert care team can recommend the most appropriate next steps and create a treatment plan that is right for you.
At Wellnest Fertility, we often begin fertility diagnostics alongside your new patient consultation (NPC) or schedule them immediately afterward. While results typically take a few days, starting testing early helps move your care forward without unnecessary delays.
Fertility challenges are common and they are not always obvious. About one in eight couples experience infertility, and roughly one-third of cases involve a male factor, one-third a female factor, and one-third a combination of both.
That’s why comprehensive testing matters and why we encourage evaluating both partners early in the process.
Fertility testing allows us to:
Understand hormone balance and ovarian reserve
Evaluate ovulation and menstrual cycle patterns
Assess the uterus and fallopian tubes
Review sperm health if there is a male partner
Identify issues that may affect treatment timing or approach
Your NPC is a one-on-one visit with a fertility specialist focused on understanding your medical history, family-building goals, and any prior testing or treatment. Often, key diagnostics can begin right away or be scheduled soon after, depending on where you are in your cycle. This early testing helps avoid delays and allows us to create a personalized plan instead of takinga one-size-fits-all approach.
Most female fertility testing focuses on understanding ovarian reserve, hormone function, and uterine health.
Blood tests measure hormones that influence ovulation and egg development. One of the most important is Anti-Müllerian Hormone (AMH), which reflects egg quantity, not egg quality. AMH levels naturally change with age, and results are interpreted in that context.
Other hormone tests may assess thyroid function, pituitary signaling, or ovulatory patterns, depending on your history.
Sometimes, an internal ultrasound allows us to perform an antral follicle count (AFC) is performed, which estimates how many follicles (each containing a potential egg) your ovaries are recruiting in a given cycle. This, along with AMH, helps us understand ovarian reserve and guide treatment recommendations.
Ultrasound also helps evaluate the uterus for things like fibroids, polyps, or structural differences that could affect implantation or pregnancy.
In some cases, additional diagnostic procedures may be recommended to assess uterine shape or tubal patency.
These can include:
Saline ultrasound studies
Hysterosalpingogram (HSG)
Hysteroscopy
Not every patient needs these tests right away, but when indicated, they provide valuable information that can impact treatment success.
If you have a male partner, sperm testing is a critical part of fertility evaluation and is often one of the simplest diagnostics to complete.
A semen analysis evaluates:
Sperm concentration
Motility (movement)
Morphology (shape)
Other factors, such as volume and fluid characteristics
Even when cycles and hormone levels appear normal, sperm factors can play a significant role in fertility outcomes. Testing both partners early helps ensure the right treatment path from the start.
Diagnostics help us understand how your body is functioning right now. They do not define your worth, your future, or your ability to build a family. Test results guide decision-making, not timelines or expectations.
Importantly, fertility testing is not about rushing into treatment. For many patients, it simply provides reassurance, education, and a clearer understanding of options.
By completing diagnostics early, often during or soon after your NPC, we can move thoughtfully from evaluation to next steps. That might mean continued monitoring, lifestyle support, fertility preservation, or treatment options such as timed intercourse, IUI, or IVF.
At Wellnest, the goal of fertility testing is not just data. It’s clarity, context, and care designed around you.
